So this is me with Marisa, my roommate from my sophomore year of college at SUNY Albany. She sent me this pic on Facebook Messenger today, and it totally made my day. I don’t like pictures of myself (taken by other people) for the most part, which is why I spend so much time behind the camera. But I love this picture, because I’m happy in it, and I can still tell.
This was the 1995-1996 academic year (so I’m 18 or 19), and Marisa was the best roommate I have had to date. I remember we talked and hung out the summer before, and worked out all of the stuff we needed for the dorm down to the rug and the posters on the wall. The poster on the left is my Nirvana poster (we were still mourning Kurt as he died our senior year of HS), and the one on the right is possibly of Live. I remember that year we played Michael Jackson’s “HIStory” to death. And Marisa let me play “Love Me Still” by Bruce Hornsby and Chaka Kahn from the Clockers soundtrack WAY past its expiration date.
Back then we had enough flannel and henley shirts to clothe an army, Adidas Superstars to rep Queens (you’re not from Queens, you ARE Queens), a serious hat collection, and “Cool Runnings” on VHS. And we had each other as roommates. Life was simpler then and we didn’t want for much (aside from better food in the cafeteria).
This was an awesome moment in time for me, and it made me really happy to see it, so I had to post it.
I’m a woman all the time. But I tend to be a lady only at restaurants with cloth napkins and tablecloths. I think that’s situationally appropriate for me.
