First Hemp Protein Shake
So one of the consequences of living a mostly-meatless life is learning how to find new sources of protein. I’m still eating fish, but I’m trying to teach myself to live without it, so I’ve had to make some additional changes to compensate.
I got lucky, and found out that my banana allergy has passed. I have had a bunch of fleeting allergies to fruits, including peaches, nectarines, plums, and apples. The banana allergy affected me the worst, because I love bananas, and they are such a good source of nutrients. For the better part of 10 years, I fought magnesium and potassium deficiencies, and bananas could’ve helped to fix that. I’m lucky that I can eat them again.
At any rate, a friend of mine suggested hemp protein to help me as I continue to reduce the animal proteins I eat. So I got some Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein Plus Fiber, and threw together a smoothie. I started with 2/3 cup of half and half, 2/3 cup of coconut milk, and frozen blueberries, peaches, pineapple, and mango, along with a whole banana (I didn’t measure the frozen fruits). The product was a really, really tasty greenish smoothie that left me feeling quite full and satisfied. I’m actually so full that I really don’t need dinner.
If you’re looking for a protein powder for your smoothies, I highly recommend hemp protein. It doesn’t have an overpowering flavor, and it blended pretty smooth considering the fiber content of this particular powder.
